Estonia allocates 68 million euros for railway electrification

Estonia’s Climate Ministry has allocated an additional 68 million euros to electrify another segment of Estonian Railways in the direction of Tartu and Narva. Together with previously decided financing, a total of approximately 387 million euros will be invested for electrification and construction works.

According to Minister Kristen Michal, the goal of the investments is to make train transport even more environmentally friendly and to increase the number of users.

“In order for the number of passengers to increase, the service must be comfortable and fast and the infrastructure must be in good condition,” he said.

Of the allocated 68 million euros, 48 ​​million euros will be directed to the electrification of the Tallinn-Tartu, Tapa-Narva and Lagedi-Muuga railway sections.

Overall, in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, it has been decided to electrify approximately 500 km of railways on the Tallinn-Tartu and Tapa-Narva railway lines.
