Czechia survives winter without Russian gas and prepares for next heating season

The Czech Republic has managed to survive this winter without Russian gas and it is already preparing for the next heating season, announced the Minister of Industry and Trade, Jozef Síkela while reflecting on the tools that proved to be successful.

“Thanks to record storage levels, we are in a very good starting position for the next year as well,” said Minister Síkela.

At the base of this success, he mentioned energy savings, alternative gas sources and record storage levels already ahead of the winter season.

“Since the beginning of the year, we have not received a single cubic metre of gas from Russia, as we managed to secure sufficient gas supplies from alternative suppliers. Czech consumption is ensured by gas supplies from Norway and also liquefied natural gas from Belgium and the Netherlands,” he added.

To date, the domestic gas reservoirs are full up to approximately 51 per cent. Last year, at the end of winter, this figure was less than 14 per cent.

“Energy savings played a major role in this, for which we owe everyone a big thank you,” the Minister continued. “It is precisely energy savings that helped push down the price of gas and consequently electricity, thus increasing our energy security.” Indeed, the Czech Republic achieved the goal of saving at least 800 million cubic metres of gas for this heating season

Now, the Minister underlined that it is important for the Czech Republic to consume approximately the same amount of gas as last year.

“It’s going well so far, we’ve reduced consumption by 15 per cent since the beginning of the year, but we need to continue,” he said.
