Europe is ready to reinforce its LNG infrastructure, EU officials say

Following a virtual meeting with international gas suppliers and a press conference held on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the REPowerEU, European Commission Vice President Maroš Šefčovič said that Europe is getting ready to reinforce its liquified natural gas (LNG) infrastructure.

As Member States keep reducing their imports of Russian gas and diversifying their supplies, the regasification capacity will increase from 178 billion cubic metres (bcm) today, to 227 bcm by 2024. At the same time, Mr Šefčovič foresees an increase of LNG regasification terminals from 27 today to 35.

During the above-mentioned press conference, Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson reminded us that Europe has dramatically cut imports of Russian pipeline gas, down to around 20 bcm this year.

“Russia is no longer the number one gas supplier to Europe. It is Norway,” she underlined.

As reported by Reuters, also Ukraine seems that will take part in the EU scheme to jointly buy gas in global markets, to procure 2 bcm ahead of next winter. Participating in the EU scheme could help Ukraine to stave off gas shortages.
