Latest geological research confirms suitability of Baltic Sea for offshore wind farms

The latest geological and geotechnical seabed research confirmed that the Baltic Sea, with an area of approximately 136 square kilometres is suitable for offshore wind farms. A proof that comes ahead of the announcement of the tender for the development of two wind parks with a generation capacity of 700 megawatts (MW).

The first two stages of preparatory studies confirmed that the area is not subject to seismic activity nor overlaps with potential oil structures. The third stage evaluated the seabed soil, an important aspect for the selection of offshore wind power structures, cables and related infrastructure.

These geological investigations were financed through EU funds for a total of 11.5 million euros of preparatory works.

Both offshore wind power parks would provide approximately half of Lithuania’s current electricity needs and reduce the country’s dependence on electricity imports.
