Pioneering biowaste unit to be built in Aigialeia, Greece

The Greek Municipality of Aigialeia signed a contract to build a biowaste treatment unit, which is expected to receive approximately 5,000 tonnes of biowaste per year. All the biowaste will be converted into compost to improve the local soil.

The project, partly financed by the Cohesion fund, is worth a total of over 10,2 million euros and will create also new jobs for the local community.

“It is a pioneering project that combines the construction of a treatment unit, its operation and the collection of biowaste by the contracting company,” commented the General Secretary for Waste Management Coordination of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, Manolis Grafakos. “[…] Aigialeia is an exemplary city when it comes to waste management, given that in 2019 it was drowning in garbage and almost 5 years later, it is on the path of a very modern waste management system.”

Overall, Mr Grafakose mentioned that the whole country is working to improve its waste management system in order to narrow the gap with other European countries and achieve the EU’s goals by 2030.
